‘Resident Evil 7 biohazard’ infects iPhone and Mac, no PC needed

Resident Evil 7 biohazard by Capcom launched Tuesday on iPhone 15 Pro, top-tier iPad models and M-series Macs. The horror title is the latest AAA game to hit these Apple devices.

Two other games in the series are already available for premium Apple devices, and Resident Evil 2 Remake is in the process of being ported, too.

When Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in autumn 2023, it talked up the cutting-edge capabilities of the A17 processor that powers them. To demonstrate the chip’s capabilities, the company arranged for Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding and Assassin’s Creed Mirage to be ported to the latest top-tier iPhone. And because the same family of processors run all Apple devices, Mac and iPad users can play these console-level games too.

Another Capcom title just joined the club: Resident Evil 7 biohazard. “The acclaimed survival horror game delivers a console quality experience running natively on Apple silicon with impressive visuals and remarkable performance,” Capcom said.

First-person horror

In the game, originally released for consoles in 2017, players take on the role of Ethan Winters as he explores a creepy plantation looking for his wife.

“Fear and isolation seep through the walls of an abandoned southern farmhouse. ‘7’ marks a new beginning for survival horror with the ‘Isolated View’ of the visceral new first-person perspective,” said Capcom. “Powered by RE ENGINE, horror reaches incredible heights of immersion as players enter a terrifyingly new world of fear as they fight to survive.”

New on-screen controls work with iPhone and iPad touchscreens, but the developer recommends a game controller. Apple builds support for a range of these wireless accessories into iOS, iPadOS and macOS.

Capcom produced a trailer for the upcoming Apple version of the game:

Resident Evil 7 biohazard is on the App Store now. The base game costs $19.99. That includes the main storyline starring Ethan Winters plus the Not A Hero story DLC in which Chris Redfield is the star.

A DLC Pack is another in-app purchase at $20. “Players can also dive deeper into Ethan Winters’ tale with the Gold Edition upgrade, which expands the game with a variety of optional DLC, including End of ZoeBanned Footage Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, the 5-Coin Set, Survival Pack, and Madhouse difficulty mode,” said Capcom.

In addition to its three AAA titles already available for Apple users, Capcom also said in May that Resident Evil 2 is in development for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It gave no additional details.

Expect these to take full advantage of Game Mode on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
